It was a busy day on Feb 14th. We had couples dining with us for both lunch, and of course dinner. Our Valentine's Set Meal was sold out! Lucky for those who booked early! We were too busy to be able to take photos to upload here. Due to being full house by 8pm, some customers' items were delayed and we do apologise for that. Happy holidays!

The MANGO team had a "Secret Santa" gift exchange on X'mas eve and enjoyed the gift of giving. We found it wasn't easy keeping a secret...After keeping them under our tree, even our young customers were tempted by all the wrapped presents!

Our humble little tree now sits perfectly in the middle as you enter the cafe.

We'll be having a small colouring competition soon for our young guests, 12 and below. And in keeping with the season of giving, all kids will receive a little something from us.

What would the season be without a pumpkin-like dish? Many western cultures often serve

pumpkin pies this time of year... so we thought a Thai pumpkin dessert would be ideal... though pumpkins are available all year round here..

We managed to get our purple theme coloured Christmas deco, but all that was missing were the lights. An after scouring the town for the LED ones, we finally got them on Monday. Will be posting pics of our little tree too...

Now our festive deco is almost complete, of course the final touch is the FOOD!

We decided we had to have a red theme for the food, seeing that it's Christmas and all.

Our Loi Krathong set meal received an overwhelming response and customers were buzzing at MANGO from lunch 'til dinner on Wednesday. Apologies to those customers who patiently waited their turn, and to those who came disappointed after finding out all sets had been sold out. We are definitely considering a set meal similar to the Loi Krathong set in the near future...

In fact,we were so busy, there wasn't a chance to capture the moment on

camera...

The team had prepared for everything, including

krathongs, the day before. For

customers who couldn't make it to the nearest river, we helped

them send all their bad luck away by releasing their personalised krathongs at

a river just beyond KK city.

The MANGO team had fun by the river, lighting and releasing their krathongs after a busy day.

Loi Krathong!

Loi, loi, loi krathong! Thailand's "festival of lights" falls during the fall moon on Wednesday, 12th November. Traditional banana leaf floats adorned with flowers, incense and candles- "krathong"- are set adrift along and waterways as offerings, giving thanks to the water Goddess and for sending bad luck away in return for good fortune and happiness.

For this special occassion, MANGO's Loi Krathong Set Meal for 2 is accompanied with a handmade krathong. The set is a typical Thai meal and only available on 12/11/08!

We came across a very similar format in The Daily Express, Sabah, on Friday, 17th October.

On the front page, a local seafood restaurant, Atlantis, advertised 2 of their food items, with an uncanny resemblance to MANGO's format!

The similarities were distinct:

-2 items, photographs and prices respectively

-Straightforward offer: Item & price- no additional text

-Phoenetically spelt name of item in local dialect

It's the first time since we noticed them advertising in the press, so we're flattered that they thought our ad format might work for them too!

It's great to see new faces and welcome back friends. One of our youngest patrons ( well her mum, A, is a fan of ours), is shy and adorable Erika. Her mum is Thai and she's always giving us positive feedback. On a recent visit, they brought another Thai friend with them too.

We also welcomed a gathering of Fiona's friends yesterday. We served a whopping 12 item dinner buffet!

The "big" eaters seemed to enjoy everything, right up to dessert. Although a few didn't turn up, they managed to takeaway for them and we're sure they'd have had a feast last night too!

Futsal!

The team participated in a long-awaited futsal match, playing against the team at Euro Cafe, at Jesselton Point. The game started late since the other team arrived late and we only had half of the allocated time to play :-( But all the guys were knackered despite playing only a 30 minute game! It was ladies nite, so all the girls joined in, in good spirits. However, our team we lost! Nevertheless, it was a fair battle and a great tension reliever for all!

What a week! We've updated our menu and had one of our busiest lunch crowds this past Friday (cheers to our great team). Yolanda and her 'entourage' from the Sabah Tourism Magazine, dropped by for food tasting which they thoroughly enjoyed... look out for their review in the August issue. Since our opening, we've about 50 customers who have shared their feedback with us. We're glad to say we're on the right track! With more than 95% positive and encouraging feedback, we're pushing ahead to better our services. We strive to improve ourselves in all facets of our cafe. We are proud to say, without a doubt, serve the most authentic Thai cuisine, certified by our many Thai friends and those who frequent Thailand. Our cuisine is affordable, and largely based on the good hawker food found on the streets and markets of Bangkok.

However one thing's for sure; there is the other 5% who were not pleased at all. With this, we've come to the conclusion that we have 2 types of customers: fans and.... haters!

The fans are those who either have had Thai food before, and love it, or those who haven't had much experience with Thai food, yet love what we offer. Then there are the haters who on the most part, have had little or no Thai cuisine experience and bash us up completely with their "criticism", which we always take constructively. We wish them luck on their gastronomic escapades.... So "sa wat dee" to both our fans and haters, from Mango.

We celebrated John's mum's birthday, Maureen, at Mango yesterday evening, along with family members. She is also the very person who created part of our staff uniform- our signature Thai pants! She will always be an important part of Mango. Happy birthday Auntie!

We introduced our mango cupcakes and green tea cupcakes earlier in the week, and my no.1 fan, Sammi, came to visit! She was so pleased to see the cupcakes, on top of the 2 avocado ice-cream "potong" that she ate.

Sticky rice mango, "khao niew ma muang" has garnered quite a following too, over the past week. Well, Friday nite we catered for a surprise birthday party at Kinabalu Golf Club, and we were glad to see that most of the food had been cleared off the serving trays. Despite a surprise with the SMS for our joint promo with DiGi that was sent out earlier today, we managed to serve guests with the set menu. At the same time, we kicked off our Thai Mixed Rice Lunch.. very economical and fast for the executives in the area. RM1 for each vegetable, and RM1.50 for each meat. Boy, we had some happy campers! Glad that they've said they'll come back again too.

So we did have a number of people calling to enquire, and we believe this is an offer not to be missed. However I'm not sure why some of the callers expressed their concern for Thai food being too spicy (??), even after explaining to them that they could request no chillies if they wanted... However, that defeats the purpose of Thai food... strange but true!

Engine's revved up

The opening was a blast, and we're quickly getting into gear for our mixed rice lunch coming up next week.. In the meantime, there're always things we learn from customers that keep us on our toes...However, the plus side is that it's always heartening to see people enjoy your food. Especially when you've put your heart and soul into making it. For instance, we had an order of one of my of mango cupcakes- mango pieces and mango buttercream- and the customers asked for another! Plus almost all the food was cleared off the plates. So far, we've had very positive reviews. Our opening day was really a test for us and I must thank our entire team for doing so well. And thank you for your support, especially fellow bloggers!

We did it! Despite all our worries, our opening attracted a good crowd for both the official lunch opening and the day's dinner. In fact, the food was swiped off the plates within 1.5 hours during both sessions. Our dinner crowd was kinda overflowing, as latecomers struggled to find seats. Being stressed and getting stressed

In KK, it's pretty hard to get yourself stressed. We're lucky to have few stress related causes like hour long traffic jams, bosses, tolls, getting parking in the mall....But what we do get is people who work you up! I'm not sure why we keep encountering people who don't keep their word. They just play us out... And I think we seem to have a small issue with those who just don't answer their phone. What's up with that? So we've learnt that the moral of the story is be patient and persevere! Just do what you have to do. You will get what you want! So here's to a very busy 2 days ahead before our opening! We'll be posting the menu up soon too.

There are still issues that cropped up with our kitchen equipment and have quickly proceeded to resolve it...

No matter how well you plan an opening, it's so hard to avoid these things! Our staff did

get the hygiene and health training done with City Hall, thank goodness that's out of the way. Friends and family are all anxious to see the place and taste our food, as we are.... Plus our chairs and tables finally arrived!

So we couldn't proceed with our opening because all these fixtures arrived a week ago, and are now 90% functional. The look is really coming together and our staff training continues.. Enjoy the shots of progress!

Gearing up

Despite our disappointment, it has been counteracted with unexpected, valuable feng shui advice that couldn't have come at a better time. Minor adjustments are no harm; all the better to ensure a prosperous business! And with friends Riq & Emma in KK for the planned launch, it was a good time to relieve the tension. It turned out well since we had more time to bring them around.

Our frustration with the delay has turned into constructive ideas to further improve our cafe's identity, and has prepared us even better for the opening. We're all on standby as contractor chasing continues....

After much thought & sleepless nites, we finally admit that our cafe won't be ready this 18th May. Factors involve renovation and the inability to get contractors to fulfill their promises (which they usually don't). It was a tough and painful decision but it was necessary, we don't want to give less than 100% to our guests as it would give a "wrong" lasting impression. Nevertheless, we always believe things happen for a reason and it forces us to sit down and re-table the strategy and re-think the importance of getting things right at first go..like Eminem put it.."You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow cuz opportunity comes once in a lifetime. " I don't usually listen to his "philosophical" words, but in this context he does make some sense. With this we would like to apologise to you for canceling all your appointments and errands in order to make it to our opening. We hope that this will not hinder you from attending our new re-scheduled date for our cafe's big day, which i will announce within this 48 hours (we are waiting for a reply from our Merlin) .. will blog soon. Approaching the finishing line

Pressure works wonders and when under the influence one can produce amazing results... It's been crazy!! But making calls and driving around sourcing for raw materials is really a skill. A skill that no corporate office will ever teach you! I'm glad we found some of the Thai utensils- wooden mortar & pestle, and rice bowl/holder. We've been pretty lucky in that sense..

We're anxious about the shop's interior finishing but hope that you'll all bear with us during the first few days and weeks to come.. John and I have been facing a number of obstacles, but will continue trooping on. We are proud of our concept, and can't wait for it to be ready for our Sunday debut!!

Buy, buy, buy!

It's quite shocking the way you need to spend when you start your own business. I'll never get used to it, but buying all the necessities earlier is a must. The smaller the item, the more easily you forget about it and the more important it becomes when it comes to the crunch. So better to get them out of the way... like plastic containers, forks and spoons. And the worst part is that these things take time to get together! The bigger ones like tables & chairs are just too darn obvious, and easier to sort out. Anyhow, the look of the place is coming together, and pleased that we're almost there!

We're both nervous yet confident with the opening and really looking forward to both the event and the response to the food!

Bought rectangular plates for the cafe today.. more to go. Praying that the renovation will be completed soonest possible, but it's been slow the past week. Anyway, looking forward to the opening. Will be posting a few more photos of the progress made.

Tiling works almost done

While most of the tiling has been laid today, we're finalising our menu for our opening.

At the same time, we've been perfecting the recipes and making sure we've got our suppliers for our fresh ingredients. We didn't know that the pea eggplants were grown locally, and John was pleased to have found a few suppliers today.

The taste and authenticity of our food is what we're proud and can't wait to share it with you. We're sure you'll agree when you dine with us soon...
